West Nile Virus Clinical Trial

Dear Prospective Trial Participant,

Thanks so much for your interest in GenoMed’s trials against West Nile virus encephalitis.

We believe a safe and already available blood pressure pill will decrease the chance of dying from West Nile Virus Encephalitis by making symptoms go away faster. We need your help to prove this, one way or the other. In September, 2003, we treated our first 8 patients with West Nile virus encephalitis, of whom 7 responded promptly. The eighth person, who had chronic leukemia, died despite our intervention. This case series has been published in the Pharmacogenomics issue of Current Topics in Medicinal Chemistry (vol. 4, no. 13 pp. 1433-1445). The PDF file can be downloaded from our website at: http://www.genomed.com/index.cfm?action=investor&drill=publications. Click on paper #6.

In the summer of 2004, we treated 6 more patients with WNV, for a running tally of 11-3. The two additional failures came in elderly patients who had been in coma for over a month before we began our treatment.

As of August 19, 2006, our treatment has been successful in 20 of 23 people (87% success rate), 6 of 12 birds (50% success rate), and 3 of 3 horses (100%).

What we've learned so far is the following: If a person is already severely immunosuppressed because they have leukemia like our first patient, or have a kidney transplant, or are taking chemotherapy for cancer, our treatment is not for them. Severely immunosuppressed patients should consider contacting the National Institutes of Health (NIH) or Centers for Disease Control about another study they're promoting, one which uses antibodies to West Nile virus developed from healthy patients in Israel.

WE ALREADY KNOW THAT OUR TREATMENT IS NOT FOR PATIENTS WITH BACTERIAL MENINGITIS--THEY NEED I.V. ANTIBIOTICS IMMEDIATELY OR THEY WILL DIE!--OR HERPES SIMPLEX ENCEPHALITIS--THEY NEED ACYCLOVIR I.V., AN ANTI-VIRAL DRUG.

But for the population at large who has WNV, including the very young and the very old, we believe our approach will work, based on our 87% response rate so far for WNV patients. The sooner our drug is started, the better. About half of our patients have been above the age of 60.

But we need you to be absolutely clear that, until we have many more patients, we simply do not know whether our treatment approach will work for all patients, or for all stages of West Nile virus encephalitis. So we cannot make any guarantee whatsoever that GenoMed's treatment approach will work in your particular case.

For more background, please download the attached documents at the bottom of this page. Before you can download them, your email address will be asked for, so that we can follow up with you as part of this study.

Please share these materials immediately with your physician so he or she can help you decide whether to participate in our clinical trial. Your physician must agree, since the drug we use---either an ACE inhibitor if your blood pressure is high, or an angiotensin II receptor blocker (ARB) if it is normal or low---requires a doctor's prescription. If you decide to participate, please also print out and sign the Informed Consent and FAX it back to me at one of the two FAX numbers below.

Please call or email me if you have any questions at all. E-mail is by far the fastest, cheapest, and most efficient way to get a hold of me.

Yours Sincerely,

Dave Moskowitz MD

Please remember, we use exactly the same treatment for EEE, although there is much less known about EEE than WNV. You will be asked to provide your email address, first and last name so that we can keep track of everybody involved in the trial. Thanks very much!
